  • Story Text: In france, the President of the Ivory Coast, Felix houphouet-Boigny, said on Thursday (30 September) that it was up to Britain to solve the Rhodesian issue.

    SYNOPSIS: President Houphouet-Boigny was on a private visit to Paris, and made a courtesy call at the Elysee Palace to see French President Valerie Giscard d'Estaing. Speaking to newsmen after the visit, the Ivory Coast President said Rhodesia was ??? Britain;s responsibility, and it was Britain which must create the conditions allowing the African majority there to take power. But he said Britain should not take part in the current negotiations between the white Rhodesian government and African leaders. President Houphouet-Boigny was one of the first African leaders to make contact with South Africa, and has always favoured peaceful methods of solving the Rhodesian problem. However, his involvement in the current developments on Rhodesia has been slight.

    The Ivory Coast leader spent just under an hour with the French President, but no details of their discussions were released. The visit was originally scheduled for a week earlier but was postponed for health reasons.
