- Story Text: Peace process at delicate stage after prison
breakout at weekend.
Ivory Coast's ruling party on Monday (July 25)
blamed rebels holding the north of the country for a series
of attacks on security forces at the weekend, but the
rebels said they had nothing to do with it.
The accusations underscored the deep mistrust between
the sides as a hobbling peace process in the world's top
cocoa grower enters a delicate stage, with rebels due to
begin registration for a long-delayed disarmament scheme on
July 31.
Agboville's streets were largely deserted as government
soldiers armed with rocket launchers patrolled among
smashed up cars and went from door to door checking
identity papers.
Groups of pro-government Young Patriots armed with
machetes and rifles set up checkpoints around the town,
where up to 2,000 prisoners escaped when a jail was
attacked in the weekend chaos.
