  • Story Text: The Iranian Prime Minister, Amir Abbas Hoveyda, said in Paris on Tuesday (25 May) that his country had signed contracts to buy two nuclear power plants from France.

    Mr. Hoveyda was non a five day visit to france. He announced the contract sighing after luncheon talks with the French President, Valery Giscard d'Estaing. He has also had discussions with the French Premier Jacques Chirac and the Foreign Minister, Jean Sauvagnargues.

    Framatome - a subsidiary of the French Creusot-Loire engineering concern specialising in building nuclear power plants - said that Iran has ordered two stations of the Untied States Westinghouse type. They will be built under license in France and the contracts are worth 5,000 million france (1,200 million US dollars).

    In a statement to newsmen the Iranian Prime Minister said that a agreement signed with France two years ago provided for the transfer of nuclear technology. Iran has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and has agreed to submit to controls laid down by the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

    France has decided on a policy of exporting its nuclear technology, provided that all the necessary precautions are taken to prevent buyers from making nuclear weapons.
