- Story Text: London Fashion Week closes with contrasting
collections by design duo PPQ and Singaporean-born Ashley
Isham.
Rocker girls from the 1950s and sophisticated
glamour queens brought London Fashion Week to a close on
Thursday (September 23, 2004) in the contrasting collections of
design duo PPQ and Singaporean designer Ashley Isham.
PPQ designers Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker called
their second collection on the official London Fashion Week
schedule "Horror Attack" and said it was inspired by
"European rockers from the 50s and feline femininity."
Prints dominated the collection, from tiny florals to
bold geometric patterns, appearing on big 1950s-style
skirts and dresses. Pretty, feminine sundresses appeared
alongside tough denim trousers and jackets printed with
skull motifs. Colours were black, white, pink, orange and
turquoise.
Molyneaux and Parker started their PPQ label in 1999
and design both a main line collection and a lingerie
collection, both of which are produced in their own factory
in Nottingham. They also have a flourishing record label
recently re-named 1234.
Singaporean-born designer Ashley Isham showed a
sophisticated and glamorous collection with a seaside feel
for Spring/Summer 2005. Models emerged from
brightly-coloured beach huts onto a catwalk made of sand,
many wearing huge sunglasses and little swimming caps.
Bright turquoise and vibrant orange were the
cornerstone colours of the collection, mixed with plenty of
gold and silver. The silhouette was long and fluid,
dominated by silky bias-cut wrap dresses for evening and
simple, elegant sun dresses for a daytime. For the beach,
sexy sequin bikinis made an appearance, worn with simple
trench coats and wraps.
Isham set up his own label in late 2000 after studying
at the London College of Fashion, Central St. Martin's
College and Middlesex University.
Earlier this year he became the first official
womenswear designer for BAFTA (the British Academy of Film
and Television Arts), dressing actress Miranda Richardson,
director Denise Roberts and model Jodie Kidd amongst
others.
