- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld has met with
his counterpart South Korean Defence Minister Kim to discuss
the effects of changing the current U.S. military strategy
and re-affirmed the joint U.S. and South Korean defence policy
towards North Korea.
Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday
(June 21) a review of U.S. defence policy had reinforced the
importance of South Korea in Washington's global strategy.
Rumsfeld declined to say how the ongoing study of military
strategy, which is expected to place added emphasis on Asia in
America's military posture, might directly affect the 37,000
U.S. troops now stationed in South Korea.
"Throughout this process, everything I have seen
reinforces the importance of the U.S.-Republic of Korea
relationship and our involvement in that important part of the
world," he said during a news conference with visiting South
Korean Defence Minister Kim Dong-shin.
The allied defence chiefs met at the Pentagon for more
than an hour, and Kim expressed pleasure at support by the
Bush administration for South Korean President Kim Dae-jung's
policy of seeking better relations with North Korea.
Both Rumsfeld and Kim said their countries would continue to
maintain and modernise their forces arrayed against the North.
"It is necessary to maintain U.S. forces on the Korean
peninsula in the long term so that we may continue to ensure
peace and stability on the peninsula as well as Northeast
Asia," Kim said.
The Bush administration had talks with a North Korean
representative in New York last week in an attempt to resume
arms negotiations which the United States suspended when
President George W. Bush took office in January.
