- Story Text: Rumsfeld and Chinese Defense Minister renew
relations in Washington
U.S. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld met with
Chinese Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan on Tuesday (October
28) at the Pentagon in an attempt to reinvigorate
U.S.-China relations.
General Cao is the first Chinese defence minister to
visit Washington since a Chinese fighter and a U.S. spy
plane collided in April 2001. After the crash, Secretary
of Defence Rumsfeld cut military-to-military relations with
China. The administration was angered that the Chinese
government imprisoned 24 crew members for 11 days on Hainan
Island. Upon the crew's release, China did not allow the
U.S. to fly the damaged plane off the island, and insisted
that it be removed in pieces and reassembled in the United
States.
In addition, relations between the two countries have
been strained since the U.S. severed ties after China's
crackdown on student protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989.
