They play in the water like we do, or like little kids play in the bath. It is great for their skin. They go in the sand, powder their skin with it and go back into the water. It is about general well-being. They feel a little lighter in the water, as well. It is just fun for them." VARIOUS OF ELEPHANT AND YOUNG ELEPHANT PLAYING IN THE WATER

- Story Text: Spring cleaning for elephants at Berlin Zoo: the nine Asian elephants took the first bath of the year in their outdoor enclosure on Friday (April 09).
At still fairly low temperatures a few apples help the animals to overcome hesitation and step into the cold water.
"For the little elephants it is a game, like for human children," elephant keeper Rolf Becker told Reuters. "They play in the water like we do, or like little kids play in the bath. It is great for their skin. They go in the sand, powder their skin with it and go back into the water. It is about general well-being. They feel a little lighter in the water, as well. It is just fun for them."
During the winter months, the elephants were given daily showers indoors because a daily wash helps elephants to keep their skin flora intact. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
