- Story Text: David Beckham unveils his own soccer academy.
England captain David Beckham unveiled plans for his
first international soccer school on Monday (March 14).
The David Beckham Academy near the Millennium Dome in
Greenwich, south-east London, will open in the summer with
a second school to be unveiled in Los Angeles later in the
year.
The Real Madrid midfielder was at the site to
officially announce his plans and was joined by pupils from
his former school, Chingford Foundation School in east
London, who will be among children offered training.
Beckham, 29, was inspired to set up the schools after
attending the school of England legend Bobby Charlton as a
youngster.
Beckham plans to devote his time to the scheme at the
end of his playing career, rather than enter management.
He insisted today that the academy was not about
finding the stars of the future.
"I always wanted to be a professional footballer and
now I am in a position where I can create an academy of my
own." said Beckham at a news conference. "I have grown up with
footb
all and to see the happiness
that football brings to kids, for me that is the most
important thing, that they can come in and learn with a
smile on their faces.
"It is about kids coming here and having fun and
enjoying it - it is not just about creating players."
