- Story Text: Argentine President Maria Estela Peron, shaking up her government amid signs of a power struggle within the Peronist Movement, swore in Raul Quijano as her new Foreign Minister on Friday (16 January).
Senor Quijano, aged 52, was chairman of the United Nations Commission for International Administrative Affairs. He arrived from New York early in the day and was offered the post almost immediately the Presidential press office said.
The President sacked four of her Ministers on Thursday (15 January) after demanding the resignation of her eight man cabinet to reshuffle her team and strengthen her authority. Senor Peron has been under heavy pressure in recent months to resign or take a long leave of absence.
Senor Quijano replaces Manuel Arauz Castex whose resignation Senora Peron accepted on Thursday. His dismissal surprised observers because his popularity had risen recently over his decision to demand that Britain recall its ambassador in connection with the dispute over the Falkland Islands. However government sources said his dismissal did not indicate disapproval of his stand on the issue.
Two powerful bomb explosions seriously damaged the offices of the British Cultural Institute in the central Argentine city of Cordoba on Thursday.
