- Story Text: A favourite project of the late Argentine President Juan Peron, to bring together Latin-American countries in a major social and economic scheme, is under discussion in Buenos Aires this week. All Latin-American countries were represented at the opening of the first Inter-American Conference of Social Security on Monday (29 July). Also there were delegates from Spain, Portugal and the Philippines.
The conference was to have been opened by Juan Peron, to launch his project for the integration of social security in Latin America. In the event, the debate was opened by his widow, President Maria Estola de Peron. But the conference's purpose is still to adopt an Inter-American programme for social security and family benefits.
In her opening address, President Maria Peron warned that developed nations were responsible for economic fraud against poorer nations. She spoke of the need to achieve social planning in this "age of insecurity".
SYNOPSUS: President Maria Estela de Peron, Argentina's new head of state, on Monday, saw the foundation laid to a project that had been important to her late husband, General Juan Peron. At the San Martin Theatre in Buenos Aires, four-hundred delegates from all over Latin-America gathered to attempt to establish a new social order throughout their region, by setting up an integrated programme for social security and family benefits.
Argentina's Social Welfare Minister Jose Lopez Rega opened this first Inter-American Conference on Social Security Planning. But General Peron had taken a great interest in setting up the conference and had been due to inaugurate it prior to his death early in July.
When she spoke, President Maria Peron spoke of the need to achieve social planning during the present age of insecurity. Latin-America, she said, reject the systems offered by the highly developed nations, which she accused of practicing economic fraud against poorer countries. She also spoke of the huge problems facing concerted international social planning -- the population explosion, irrational use of natural resources and contamination of the environment. This week's conference is also attended by delegates from Spain, Portugal and the Philippines.
