- Story Text: Firefighters in Baghdad have been battling a raging
fire that destroyed a warehouse storing paper used for
printing Iraqi currency.
Another fire razed down an electricity company store in
the Iraqi capital and there was another smaller fire in a
grass field that sent clouds of smoke billowing skywards.
It was not immediately known what caused the fires on
Saturday (June 28) or if they were linked to a recent wave of
attacks, sabotage and looting.
Witnesses said the fire at the large warehouse in
Baghdad's Nahda district started mid-morning and firefighters
struggled for hours to contain it. There were no reports of
casualties.
The U.S.-led administration in Iraq last week printed
small denominations of the dinar with ousted leader Saddam
Hussein's picture on them because most Iraqis were refusing to
use the largest 10,000 dinar (7 U.S. dollars) note due to
counterfeit fears.
An official at the scene blamed it on pro Saddam elements.
"Fire broke out in one of the warehouses belonging to the
Education Ministry, as far as we know this is an act of
sabotage," said Ali Saeed, referring to himself as Director of
Civil Defence.
In another part of the city a fire rapidly consumed the
electricity company store and there was no sign of
firefighters. There were huge clouds of thick black smoke over
Baghdad.
"The reasons for this fire is sabotage to affect the
security of this country, and the reason that such things
happen is because we already do not have any security or a
functioning government, and everybody does whatever they
want," said Farham Amad, a resident from the area.
In the third fire, the grass and bush fire sent huge black
clouds of smoke billowing into the air and at one point a fire
engine was seen heading into the area, but did not attempt to
put out the fire.
Saboteurs have struck at power lines and oil and gas
pipelines in the past two weeks, prompting U.S. officials to
accuse loyalists of Saddam Hussein, ousted on April 9 in a
U.S.-led invasion, of carrying out the attacks.
