- Story Text: Mid-way through his historic European tour, Emperor Hirohito of Japan, accompanied by the Empress Nagako, flew into Orly Airport form Brussels on Saturday (2 October), The Emperor and Empress were given a warm welcome by senior French Government officials. At the airport too were large numbers of Japanese children waving paper flags. And or arrival at their hotel, they found crowds of greet them.
Two hours after they landed, the Emperor and Empress want to the Elysee Presidential Place, where they were met and entertained to lunch by President and Madame Pompidou. The Emperor is also due to meat the Duke of Windsor at the former British Monarch's home in the Bois de Boulogne, a Paris suburb. The two men last met in 1921 when the Emperor. then Japan's Crown Prince, paid his first visit to Europe.
SYNOPSIS: Mid-way through his historic European tour, Emperor Hirohito of Japan, accompanied by the Empress Nagako, flew in to Orly Airport from brussels on Saturday. They were met by senior French Government officials, and a warm welcome awaited them form crowds of Japanese.
Although the Emperor's visit is unofficial, he was accorded full honours at the airport. The Republican Guards, in traditional ceremonial uniform, provided a guard of honour with their sabres. Japanese children lined up waving paper flags as the Imperial couple walked along the 80 yards of red carpet laid out for them. Monsieur Roger Frey, French Minister of State for Administrative Reform, introduced the Emperor to the waiting France officials. The Emperor last visited France fifty years ago, when he was Japan's Crown Prince. His current tour makes him the first reigning japanese Emperor to set foot outside Japan in over two thousand years. He has already been to Denmark and Belgium, and will be flying to Great Britain after his stay in France.
Two hours after their arrival at Orly Airport, the Emperor and Empress went to the Elysee Presidential Palace, where they were met by President and Madame Pompidou our a lunch engagement. The Emperor and the French President spoke for a few minutes through an interpreters before going inside to meet the lunch guests.
The other guests included French Prime Minister Jacques Chaban-Delmas, French Foreign Minister Maurice Schumann, and the Japanese Foreign Minister Takeo Fukuda. Later that afternoon, the Emperor and Empress were due to begin their sightseeing tour of Paris. Their programme includes the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and Montmartre.
