- Story Text: Judge issues warrant for arrest of Iraq's "prince of
the marshes" in connection with the murder of a policeman.
A U.S.-appointed Iraqi judge has issued a warrant to
arrest one of the fiercest opponents of former President
Saddam Hussein in connection with murder, politicians and
lawyers familiar with the case said on Friday (June 18).
Abdelkarim Mohammadawi is known as "prince of the
marshes" for leading operations against Saddam Hussein in
Iraq's southern marshlands even after Saddam drained the
area from water to crush the rebels. He is an ally of Ahmad
Chalabi, a former exile whom the United States has turned
against.
Chalabi helped introduce Mohammadawi to the outside
world in the 1990s. The two became members of the
U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council last year. The
council dissolved itself earlier this month to make room
for a new government.
The warrant against Muhammadawi was issued in relation
to the murder of a police officer in the southern Amara
province a few weeks ago. His two brothers are also wanted.
Judge Zuhair al-Maliki issued the warrants. He is the
same judge who issued warrants to arrest Habib Aras,
Chalabi's head of security and son of a Kurdish leader.
Maliki's critics say he was not acting independently
and questioned his credentials.
Abbas al-Anbakli, a former senior judge whom the
Coalition Provisional Authority fired last year, said
Maliki was working as a translator for U.S. forces and was
then made a first class judge -- a rank that normally takes
15-20 years to obtain.
