- Story Text: Tens of thousands of anti globalist activists have
started marching towards the French/Swiss border in the area
of Annemasse, in the largest protest so far against the G8
summit in Evian.
Several thousand anti-globalisation demonstrators have
started to march from the Alpine town of Annemasse towards the
Swiss border on Sunday (June 1), for the largest protest
scheduled to take place against the 3-day G8 summit of heads
of state in Evian.
The demonstrators, many of whom have been camping in the
outskirts of Annemasse, come from all over the world and
belong to an array of anti globalisation and anti war
movements.
Carrying banners and singing slogans, the demonstrators
have been moving from Annemasse towards the customs on the
Swiss border, where they will attempt to meet up with
protesters moving in the same direction from Geneva.
French anti-globalist leader and head of the French
farmers confederation Jose Bove was among the crowd, as was
the president of French group ATTAC, Jacques Nikonoff.
"The heads of state must really engage themselves. The
first sign of that would be to cancel this G8 meetings. We
must stop this charade and its resolutions because in fact
nothing changes," Jose Bove said.
Since the middle of the week, hundreds of mostly orderly
activists have been camping at an Annemasse airport, ready to
protest against this weekend's G8 summit.
"We are here to protest against G8, because for 28 years
liberal politics have been confronting each other in the
world, and the result that we see is that poverty grows and
grows. The breach between rich and poor countries gets wider,
access to water is still not guaranteed for everyone, the poor
countries' debt has not been cancelled, tax havens flourish,
we have all the reasons to protest," said Nikonoff.
Annemasse is located 48 kilometres from Evian, France,
where the leaders of the world's eight richest countries have
started meeting on Sunday (June 1).
Evian is hemmed in on one side by Lake Leman and on the
other by the Alps. The area has been sealed off, with road
blocks up to 112 kilometres away. Almost two thousand
demonstrators have been clashing with police since the early
hours of Sunday, as they insist to try to go beyond police
barriers and get close to the G8 meeting.
