- Story Text: Matt Damon, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, and Sharon Stone are a few of the stars that attended the premiere of the HBO documentary, "His Way" Tuesday (March 22) in Hollywood.
"His Way" is about the life of Hollywood legend Jerry Weintraub, producer of the "Ocean's Eleven" and "Karate Kid" franchises.
"He's just a great dealmaker. And he knows how to talk to people and know how to construct these things that seem impossible but everyone feel really happy about the outcome and happy about the process. He's just very, very talented about those things. And I haven't met many people who can do that," Matt Damon said.
Weintraub got his start as a concert promoter and started his own company, Management III in 1965.
It was his nationwide tour of Elvis Presley in the early 1970's that made him wealthy. In 1974 Frank Sinatra asked him to produce a tour which finished with a worldwide live concert from Madison Square Garden called, "Frank Sinatra:The Main Event". The next year he produced his first film, Robert Altman's award winning "Nashville."
"When he smiles, if you look at his smile it actually is the Hollywood sign," said actor Billy Crystal.
In 1986s with Weintraub now in Hollywood full-time and wealthy after the Karate Kid franchise he started the Weintraub Entertainment Group. The Weintraub Entertainment Group would be his one unsuccessful venture as the company declared bankruptcy in 1990 after a half dozen of unsuccessful films.
"I reinvent myself every ten years," Weintraub said.
It was his next reinvention that would help bring him back to Hollywood elite. In 2001 he produced Ocean's Eleven with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts.
"He's the only producer that I know that is old time and new time," says Billy Crystal.
It is on the "Ocean's Eleven" set where he became friends with current worldwide stars Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Matt Damon.
"Being Jerry Weintraub's friend is a very unique experience," laughs Matt Damon, "like for instance, today I was shooting a couple of hours away and I told him I'm afraid I might not be able to make it in time, for you know, the movie and I really wanted to see it and he was going to send a helicopter to pick me up."
As for how it feels to be the star of the film instead of the man behind it Jerry Weintraub said it was a different experience.
"You know I never arrive at premieres and just saw my picture up and not Sylvester Stallone or Matt Damon or Brad Pitt or George Clooney or Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart or the people I worked with in my life. Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra. So it's all pretty mind boggling," Jerry Weintraub said.
The documentary will debut later this year on HBO and features interviews with actors Matt Damon, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, James Caan, and former President George H.W. Bush. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
