- Story Text: The cast of AMC's "Mad Men" took to the red carpet Wednesday (July 20) for the much anticipated premiere of the fourth season of the hit drama series, hot on the heels of the show's 17 Emmy nominations this year. Attending the event were the stars of the series, including Emmy nominees Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, and Christina Hendricks, and other members of the cast Vincent Kartheiser, Aaron Staton, and Rich Sommer.
Hamm, who reprises his role of advertising executive Don Draper in "Mad Men," believes that the series is thought provoking because of the unique attention to detail of the crew behind the 60s era costumes and sets. He is nominated this year for two Emmy awards, one for best lead actor in a drama for "Mad Men" and another for his guest starring role on the NBC sitcom "30 Rock."
"So many people work so very hard on the show, it's why our show feels so accurate," says Hamm. "Everyone takes their job very seriously and tries hard, honestly."
He said he is also proud of the relatively bare bones shooting schedule for "Mad Men."
"We are this kind of scrappy upstart in many ways, we shoot during the summer when the whole lot's empty and we don't really have the big fancy lot or the big trailers or any of that kind of stuff, but we still try to put out the best show we can," says Hamm.
"Mad Men" is an hour long drama about the cutthroat advertising industry in 1960s New York City. The series is wildly popular with critics and viewers alike, and it broke ground in 2008 when it became the first basic cable program to win an Emmy award for outstanding drama series, which it took home again in 2009, and is up for again in 2010.
Actress Elisabeth Moss, who is nominated for an Emmy Award for Lead Actress in a drama series, says that the cast and crew of "Mad Men" are not resting on their laurels.
"I think that we strive for excellence and we, we don't settle, we don't rest on our laurels and decide that 'well, now we've made it, so we can just relax,' I think we feel more pressure every season, and more pressure every episode, and Matt feels it the most, and we feel it too, and we just try to get better and better and better and not disappoint anyone," Moss said.
For actress Christina Hendricks, appearing on a show which is praised for its costuming as much as its storylines can teach one to be more fashion-conscious. Hendricks is nominated for an Emmy in the supporting actress category this year.
"I think with the success of the show, I find myself not wearing my grubby clothes from next to the bed to the grocery store anymore," says Hendricks. "You know, you are a little bit more aware when people are coming up to you, telling you that they enjoy the show, then all of a sudden you're like, 'what am I wearing?'"
Perhaps more creative than the show's writing are the responses to nosy reporters asking for clues to what happens this season.
"It's one of those things I can't specifically answer..." says actor Rich Sommer.
"I mean you'll have to see it and find out," says Elizabeth Moss.
"Nah, nah, nah," says an uncooperative Christina Hendricks.
"You think because I'm at the end of all these interviews, I'm just going to give up and give you all this, no, I ain't that easy," says Vincent Kartheiser.
The Fourth Season of "Mad Men" premieres on AMC on July 25. The 62nd Primetime Emmys will be handed out in Los Angeles on August 29th in a live broadcast ceremony. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
