- Story Text: Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine opened the Los Angeles Film Festival on Thursday (June 16) with their new dark comedy, "Bernie."
The duo walked the red carpet together and talked about their film - which is based on a true murder story.
"He's a mortician from Texas and he has a relationship with a recently widowed woman, played by Shirley, and they have an interesting relationship and then things go badly," said Black.
Things go very bad. Black's character kills MacLaine's, then goes to great lengths to create the illusion that she's alive.
MacLaine said working with funny-man Black changed her entire character.
"During our improvisational things, we would go on and on. And, he made me laugh so hard, that became part of the character. I don't think she was really like that, but she was after I got finished with him," said MacLaine.
The film also stars Matthew McConaughey, who said audiences will be in for a real surprise with "Bernie."
"It divides two sides of thinking in this town and the fact that it really happened, but the way it went down, and almost with the innocence that it went down, you'll come out of the movie definitely feeling different than you think you would going in to see a movie about a woman who got murdered by this guy that the town absolutely loved."
