- Story Text: Legendary Hollywood film director Martin Scorsesy and his cast of stars, Sir Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz and Helen Mccrory were in London's Leicester Square for the European Premieres of his latest film 'Hugo' on Monday night, November 28.
Set in 1930s Paris, the film is centred around an orphan called 'Hugo' who lives within the walls of a train station. With the help of an eccentric young girl, he tries to solve a mystery involving his recently-lost father, a heart-shaped lock and a bad-tempered toy shop owner.
Director Martin Scorsese, who is known for films with much darker more mature themes, said he wanted to do a family friendly film for his 12-year-old daughter. "Being with a young child for the past twelve years it was almost the perfect time for me to make a picture like this because it was just natural."
Working in 3D was also new for Scorcese. He told Reuters it was something he's always wanted to do.
"We had a great time doing it. What I mean is that we enjoyed working in 3D in that we had to sort of rediscover how to tell a story with pictures because of use of depth."
The future King of England, Prince Charles attended the premiere with his wife Camilla. Scorsese told Reuters it was probably the first time one of his film's had been deemed suitable for the royals. "The subject matter of my previous films doesn't lend itself to that sort of thing, but here we have a very nice family film and actually it's a very good picture," he said.
Actors Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz are the young stars of 'Hugo'. Moretz, who lays Hugo's sidekick Isabelle, has found herself in huge demand as an actress, since her memorable role as 'Hit-Girl' in 2010's 'Kick-Ass'. Speaking to Reuters, the fourteen year old said she instantly warmed to Scorsese.
"You never really know how a director is going to be, but immediately when I first met Marty with Asa when they flew us out to New York to chemistry read together; it was immediately one of the warmest experiences of my life. He was immediately, "Hey, call me Marty kid" and I was like "Ok, I'll call you Marty".
Taking to the red carpet in a black dress by Emilio Pucci and shoes from Chanel, Moretz has seen her profile leap from jobbing child actor to international super starlet.
"I went from having a lot of large brands being like; you know I don't know if we really want our clothes on you to being like, wear our clothes please. It's ridiculous to go from being nothing to something. It's a lot of hard work, it's a lot of dedication, having a dream and aspiring to be something and really working as hard as I can too."
For actor Sir Ben KIngsley, he likened his first experience working with 3D to that of working with Scorese:
"It has an all-seeing eye that 3D lens and it's a little bit like having your performance X-Rayed. The camera is appropriate to Marty, cause Marty watches you with X-Ray eyes as well. And at last he's got a camera that's his equal so between the two of them it's pretty formidable."
The London royal premiere was in aid of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund The film is an adaptation of the best-selling book, 'The Invention of Hugo Cabret', by Brian Selznick.
Other well known names in the cast include Jude Law, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ray Winstone and Christopher Lee.
In it's opening weekend in the United States, 'Hugo' made 11.4 million U.S. dollars, exceeding studio forecasts. As of November 27 it's earned 15, 380,000 U.S. dollars at the U.S box office. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
