- Story Text: The back story of the McCain-Palin 2008 campaign is coming to light in the new HBO film "Game Change."
The movie, which was adapted from the book of the same name, outlines Republican John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign and his choice of Former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as a running mate.
"I characterize the film as an attempt to just get the story right. And there were so many incredibly positive things that happened. It's not a Sarah Palin bio-pic, it's a story about Sarah Palin, John McCain and especially about Steve Schmidt who was the campaign manager who helped pick her, helped convince John McCain to put her on the ticket and then helped handle the situation as it fell out," said director Jay Roach.
Actress Julianne Moore plays Sarah Palin in the movie, but said she didn't take the role until she knew the details in the script had been verified.
"We were very concerned with veracity and for me practically, I am playing somebody who is a living figure, who's historically and cultural significant. So, I didn't want to do anything unless it had been sourced, that was one thing that Danny Strong and Jay Roach were able to assure me of, that they had - everything had been very, very carefully sourced. Once I knew that then I felt like I was able to explore this," Moore told Reuters.
Author Mark Halperin, who co-wrote the book with John Heilemann, said they did their due diligence in order to make sure their book was factual.
"We did over three hundred interviews for the book - interviews with over three hundred people for the book. So we had plenty of sources and while there are things in the book that are maybe at times people wonder about, it's all accurate and very, very well sourced and conservatively sourced throughout the whole book."
In order to prepare for the role Moore worked with a vocal coach and also listened to various Palin recordings whenever she had a chance.
"Everything is sourced, it's all there on Youtube, I had her book on tape which she read on tape. So I put everything on my iPod -- I listened to it when I was running, I listened to it when I was picking up my kids in the car. It was pretty much a constraint and I worked with my coach as often as I could, so I got the voice down before I started tackling the physicality," explained Moore.
Actress Sarah Paulson plays Nicolle Wallace in the film. During the campaign Wallace was a senior advisor and can be seen in the film prepping Palin for many of her public appearances. Paulson said in doing the film she learned more about Palin's confidence.
"A lot of people would coward in that spotlight and she did not and that is a testament to a certain characteristic of a person and it's confidence and it's pretty impressive. I would have been like, 'no thanks, I don't want to be the Vice President, no I'm not capable, I say no, I'm out.' But she was like, 'ok.' And sometimes naivety can play into that because you don't know what it is that you're saying yes to and then you get there and you're like, mommy. But she didn't, she drove right in and that's a testament to her balls. Sarah Palin's got balls."
The film will debut on U.S. cable network HBO on March 10. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
