SCU Waldheim speaking (SOUND) 1.17 TRANSCRIPT:- (WALDHEIM) "You know that it was always my opinion that this is a political problem, which has to be solved through political moves, in other words through legislation and not through military means. Therefore I always regretted in the past... and I say it now again... I always regretted the efforts to solve this problem through military means. I can only repeat here that I was, and I am still, deeply concerned by the military operations in Vietnam, and I have expressed my sincere hope that the resumed negotiations.. which started today in Paris... may finally produce a ceasefire and durable peace in Vietnam." - Story Text: At a press conference at the United Nations on Monday (8 January) Secretary-General Kort Waldheim expressed his past and present regrets at all military attempts to solve the problems of war in Vietnam. While hopeful of the outcome of the present Paris Peace Talks, Mr. Waldheim told newsmen he hoped that, regardless of the outcome of the revived talks, the massive American bombing of North Vietnam would not continue. He was sure the United Nations would be both able and willing to play any necessary part in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Indochina.
