- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of State Rice and Japanese Foreign
Minister Machimura hold talks in Washington.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and
Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura held talks in
Washington on Monday (May 2, 2005) aimed at reaffirming
commitments to invigorate the stalled six-party talks on
North Korea's nuclear ambitions and the tensions between
China and Japan over recent anti-Japan rallies in China.
Machimura said he and Rice hoped for a "more active
role" by China in convincing North Korea to return to the
six party talks. He said North Korea's missile test last
weekend made the matter ever more urgent.
Later in the day, Machimura was due to address the
conference in New York on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty (NPT).
