- Story Text: Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Moussa has
arrived in Baghdad where he is to meet Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein and other Iraqi senior officials for talks on setting
up an Arab summit and Iraqi cooperation with the United
Nations.
Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Moussa arrived
in Baghdad on Friday (January 18). His visit to the region is
the first in four years of a senior Arab official to Iraq.
Moussa is to meet President Saddam Hussein, Vice-President
Taha Yassen Ramadan and Foreign Minister Naji Sabri for talks
on an Arab summit and Iraqi cooperation with the United
Nations.
The Arab summit, scheduled to be held in Beirut in late
March, will focus on the importance of dialogue between Iraq
and the United Nations and the issue of those missing in
action since the Gulf War.
Kuwait says Iraq is holding more than 600 people, most of
them Kuwaitis. But Iraq denies any knowledge of them. Baghdad
has accused Kuwait of withholding information about Iraqis
missing since the conflict.
An Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman has recently described
Moussa as "efficient and known for his efforts to boost Arab
solidarity."
The Iraqi spokesman welcomed the trip saying: "Iraq
welcomes any step or initiative to reconcile among Arab
countries and solve all problems."
Moussa, who was born in 1936, studied law in Cairo before
embarking on a career as a civil servant in the Egyptian
Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1958. He then went on to become
Egypt's Foreign Minister.
The former Arab League Secretary-General Esmat
Abdel-Meguid, visited Iraq in February 1998 and met with
President Saddam Hussein and Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz.
Baghdad has several times criticised Abdel-Meguid,
accusing him of being biased towards Iraq's Gulf War foe,
Kuwait.
