We are still under lot of stress (over these bases). We are currently strongly demanding the Japanese government improve our lot and today I am asking the U.S. government to understand our predicament. - Story Text: US Secretary of State Colin Powell has met with Keiichi
Inamine, the governor of Okinawa on Tuesday (may 15) to
discuss the possibility of reducing the presence of American
troops on that island.
Keiichi Inamine, the governor of Okinawa is visiting
the United States to meet with US Secretary of State Colin
Powell and military officials to discuss the removal of some
American troops from that island.
Residents of the small island, home of more than half
the U.S. military personnel stained in Japan, have long called
for a reduced U.S. presence, however this does not reflect the
position of the Japanese government which views the troops as
essential to the island's security.
A strong backlash against the military erupted in 1995,
when a twelve year old Okinawan girl was raped by three U.S.
servicemen.
Okinawa is home to just over a quarter of the total U.S.
military personnel in the Asia-Pacific region.
