- Story Text: U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz has
arrived in Japan, the last destination on his tour through
East Asia.
U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz arrived in
Tokyo on Monday (June 2, 2003), the last destination on his tour
through East Asia aimed at reinforcing America's commitment to
the region.
Soon after arriving in Tokyo from Seoul, Wolfowitz met
with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi.
A key advocate of the use of U.S. power, Wolfowitz is the
most senior Pentagon official to visit the region since the
Bush administration took office two years ago.
Despite a growing nuclear threat from North Korea, the
United States is pushing forward with plans to reconfigure its
troop presence in South Korea and Japan.
There are 100,000 U.S. troops in Asia, most of them in
South Korea and Japan which are key U.S. allies in East Asia.
Wolfowitz is scheduled to meet Defense Minister Shigeru
Ishiba later on Monday.
He ends his visit on Tuesday (June 3) after meeting more
senior cabinet members.
