- Story Text: Rumsfeld and Karzai meet at the Pentagon; discuss
torture, drugs and Osama.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai met with U.S.
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on Monday (June 14, 2004)
at the Pentagon.
Taking questions from reporters after there meeting
both leaders seemed confident that al Qaeda leader Osama
Bin Laden will be captured.
"Yes, we will," Rumsfeld answered bluntly, Karzai
answered with a question, "All nations your and ours have
had fugitives on our histories' and has a fugitive run
forever? No."
Rumsfeld was also asked about the widening torture
scandal. When asked specifically if the president (Bush)
gave military officials "wiggle room" when it came to
getting information from prisoners, Rumsfeld was adamant,
"The answer to your question is no, there is no wiggle room
in the President's mind or my mind about torture. That is
not something that is permitted under the Geneva
Conventions or U.S. law."
Karzai was asked if he would give drug lords some
leniency to boost his chances in Afghanistan's September
election's Karzai also answered adamantly.
"The fight against poppies is the fight for Afghanistan
and no matter who or how we will not allow this to
continue. Poppies have criminalised the Afghan economy,
poppies prevent the institution building in Afghanistan,
poppies go hand in hand with terrorism, it feeds them, it
all also helps private militias in Afghanistan we have to
destroy it," he said.
Karzai will meet with U.S. President George W. Bush on
Tuesday (June 15).
