- Story Text: Britain's Prince Charles has enjoyed a ride on a
steam train, taken a boat trip aboard a tug and strolled along
a promenade in the Gulf of Mexico port of Veracruz.
Charles, who arrived to Veracruz on Wednesday (March
6) after a two-day trip to Brazil, is making his first visit
to Mexico since he came in 1993 with the late Princess Diana.
Belching black smoke, a steam train carrying the heir to
the British throne arrived at Veracruz punctually, bringing
the honorary guest for centenary celebrations of the port's
construction.
After opening ceremonies, Charles jumped on board a tug
for a jaunt around the port before unveiling a statue honoring
its builders, who were led by British engineer Wheatman
Pearson, later the first Lord Cowdray.
Charles, wearing a dark navy-blue suit and a light blue
tie with a zig-zag pattern, waved to the large crowd gathered
to greet him.
The prince arrived in Mexico on Wednesday for a three-day
trip that will include a visit with children who live and work
on the streets.
Later on Wednesday, Charles will fly by helicopter to the
coffee-growing town of Xalapa for a private viewing of an
anthropological museum, home to 25,000 pieces including
several colossal stone heads, known as Olmec heads.
On Thursday (March 07), Charles is expected to head for
Puebla, east of the capital, to tour the British-backed Juconi
day center for street children, which in 12 years has helped
more than 1,000 boys and girls leave the streets and return to
school and their families.
The prince later on Thursday will tour downtown Mexico
City with billionaire industrialist Carlos Slim, who is behind
a major project to revive a rundown sector of the city center
that is home to the National Palace, a cathedral and hundreds
of colonial buildings.
On Friday (March 08), Charles is scheduled to visit a
butterfly sanctuary in the state of Michoacan, west of Mexico
City. Hundreds of millions of butterflies migrate each year
from Canada to the Monarch Butterfly Reserve, but the
population was recently devastated by a freak cold snap.
