- Story Text: Billed as the 'party of all parties', 25,000 ravers from all over Europe converged on Munich's former airport in Riem on Saturday (November 4) for the technoculture 'Tribal Gathering 95'.
The thousands dedicated to dance braved long continental crossings and queueing in freezing temperatures to take part in what organisers called Germany's "most extravagant, outrageous, orgasmic event ever created".
The challenge was to dance all night. Organisers spent 250,000 pounds sterling on eight huge dance areas, each decorated with a theme to complement the music.
The halls with names as diverse as Starship Universe, Planet Erotica and Mother Earth were equipped with thunderous sound and high-powered laser systems as well as giant screen video projections and stage designs.
'Tribal Gathering 95' was designed to bring together all aspects of today's dance music, expressed by top DJ's from all over the world. Highlights included acts by the Chemical Brothers, Orbital and Plastikman.
Often touted as a culture brought up on drug abuse, new wave ravers believe the tribal gathering should be seen in a totally different light. English DJ Simon Shurey said "I think it's a good thing because it does bring people together.. there's no way to deny it. I wouldn't say it's perfect but it does tend to break down racial barriers ... It is a tribal gathering, that's the idea".
Fellow ravers agreed the purpose was for "fun... take it easy" and for "good times".
As morning came the ravers dropped out one by one to face the bleak reality of daylight and, for many, a long journey home. Some were disappointed by what the tribal gathering had to offer.
"It was too slow. The line-up wasn't bad, but there should have been more Rotterdam action... more hard core", said one young German.
But for others, who stayed till the bitter end, the rave could have gone on for another 16 hours. "I still want to go on actually . but it is finished", said a young man from Amsterdam whose only complaint was that he had to return home. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
