- Story Text: An explosion blew out a door and a window in an office in the Russian parliament building in central Moscow on Tuesday (December 5), setting a room on fire.
It was not clear if the explosion was the result of an accident or had been caused deliberately. Viktor Illyukhin, Chairman of the Duma Defence Committee said Chechen rebels could use violence to disrupt this month's parliamentary election in Russia.
Ilyukhin said Russia must be ready for guerrilla attacks outside Chechnya itself during the December 17 election.
He added it was not clear if a bomb had been planted inside the building or if the explosion was caused by "a rocket fired from outside".
The blast occurred on the seventh floor of the State Duma (lower house) building, less than 500 metres (yards) from the Kremlin walls. The fire was extinguished quickly and police cordoned off the area.
A correspondent in the parliament building said the explosion took place in the office of deputy Nikolai Lysenko, head of the extreme right-wing National Republican Party.
