- Story Text: Fifteen female officers of Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force (MSDF) on Monday (May 22) embarked for the first time aboard a long-distance training vessel together with their male colleagues.
The brand-new 4,050-ton vessel "Kashima" will make a world cruise with the women and 126 male colleagues who have just graduated from an MSDF school for senior officer candidates. They will study navigation and other basic skills during the trip.
The MSDF has decided to accept female crew members aboard its vessel, except some warships, due to a chronic lack of personnel.
However, training has posed a problem in the past as previous training vessels did not have cabins for female officers until "Kashima".
The ship will return October 26.
