From the person who is investigating, there is nothing, absolutely nothing that will actually do that for you in terms of video, statements and the like. It is my job to report to the coroner every single aspect that has been investigated in terms of conspiracy theories, to actually ensure there's a thorough investigation of every single aspect of that, and either prove or disprove those conspiracy theories. And we are actually putting every effort into that. You know we have the French who are working very closely with us and we have the best team of detectives that we could put together, which I think speaks highly of how we want to do this job that we are being asked to do." 2.38 12. - Story Text: Britain's most senior police officer retraces the
route in Paris taken by the late Princess Diana on the
night she died in a car crash.
Britain's most senior police officer travelled to
France on Monday (26 April) to retrace the route taken by
the late Princess Diana on the night she died in a Paris
car crash.
London's Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir John
Stevens, made the visit as part of an investigation into
the circumstances surrounding Diana's death which he was
asked to carry out by Britain's Royal Coroner Michael
Burgess. They were accompanied by a team of detectives.
Sir Stevens and Michael Burgess met with French
investigators and followed the route underneath the Pont de
l'Alma taken by the late Diana, Princess of Wales on the
night of her death.
Diana, whose marriage to Britain's heir-to-the-throne
Prince Charles broke down in 1992 and later ended in
divorce, was killed along with her lover Dodi al Fayed and
their chauffeur Henri Paul in the Paris crash in August
1997.
Stevens undertook his investigation at the direction of
royal coroner Michael Burgess to examine theories that the
princess was the victim of a conspiracy, variously
attributed to the royal family and intelligence agencies.
"There are a lot of conspiracy theories that relate to
the tragic death of three people in this tunnel. It is my
job to report to the coroner every single aspect that has
been investigated in terms of conspiracy theories, to
actually ensure there's a thorough investigation of every
single aspect of that, and either prove or disprove those
conspiracy theories. And we are actually putting every
effort into that", Sir John Stevens told reporters after
touring the site of the accident.
Dodi's father, Mohamed al Fayed, owner of exclusive
London store Harrods, has alleged his son and Diana were
murdered by British secret services because their
relationship was embarrassing the royal household.
An inquiry by French authorities in 1999 ruled that the
fatal crash was caused by Paul being drunk and driving too
fast.
