- Story Text: Blast echoes near hotels in central Baghdad.
An explosion shook an area of central Baghdad near
the office of the New York Times and hotels used by
foreigners on Sunday (November 14, 2004), witnesses said.
Smoke rose over the site of the blast, which scattered
shrapnel across nearby streets and appeared to have been
caused by a rocket.
There was no immediate word on casualties but the head
of security at the New York Times said none of the staff
there were hurt. The U.S. military had no immediate
comment.
Insurgents bent on expelling U.S.-led troops from Iraq
often fire mortars and rockets at hotels used by foreign
journalists and security contractors on the eastern bank of
the Tigris river.
