- Story Text: New York police officers and firefighters who worked
with rescue teams at the World Trade Center after the
hijack-suicide attacks of September 11, have visited the site
of Palestinian suicide bombings and shooting attacks in
central Jerusalem.
A group of New York police and firefighters visited
Jerusalem's Ben Yehuda mall on Tuesday (February 12, 2002).
"The visit of these heroes to Israel is a reflection of
the common bonds between the United States and Israel, of the
values we share, of the commitment to democracy and liberty to
all of the things that those who set the bombs here and who
attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon hate and
oppose. The reason why they carry out these terror attacks is
because of the things that unite us," said Malcolm Hoenlein,
Executive Vice President of the Committee of the Conference of
Major American Jewish Organizations, who co-ordinated and
organised the visit.
As part of the tour, organised by the Israeli ministry of
tourism, the firefighters and police, who participated in the
rescue work at the World Trade Center, visited Ben Yehuda mall
and Jaffa Road where several suicide and shooting attacks were
carried out.
"We have something in common in both countries now. It's
always been around and whatever we can exchange with each
other the better off we are," NYPD officer Jim Commody told
reporters while touring Jerusalem's city centre.
