- Story Text: Thousands of mourners have attended the funeral of a
Palestinian killed by Israeli soldiers whilst running,
unarmed, towards a military post in the dead of night.
And in Gaza a firefight broke out between Palestinian
youths and Israeli forces wounding more than ten people.
Some one hundred supporters of the "Peace Now" movement
have gathered near the offices of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
to demand a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians.
It was another day of mourning for thousands of angry
Palestinians who marched through the streets of the divided
West Bank town of Hebron on Saturday (February 23) for the
funeral of a Palestinian shot dead earlier by Israeli forces.
An army statement said Israeli forces had spotted a
'suspicious figure' running towards them at night shouting
'Allahu Akbar' (God is greater) and that they had shot him
dead, somewhere near the West Bank village of Halhoul.
Voice of Palestine Radio said he had been shot several
times in the head.
A few hours later, Israelis and Palestinians exchanged
fire in the southern Gaza town of Rafah, where Israeli tanks
fired at youths in the streets.
At least 16 Palestinians were injured in a firefight
between Palestinian youths and Israelis forces through the
streets of the town that houses mainly Palestinian refugees.
Masked Palestinians fired randomly as ambulances drove by
to pick up the wounded.
Some of them were rushed to hospital by car.
Later, Palestinian gunmen wounded two Israelis in a
shooting on a road near the West Bank city of Ramallah,
Israeli security sources said.
The injured were rushed to the Ein Karem hospital in
Jerusalem.
Later on Saturday evening, some one hundred supporters of
the "Peace Now" movement gathered near the offices of Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon to
demand a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians.
"It is not just to kill each other, Israelis and
Palestinians and we call (for a) ceasefire (on) both sides and
to recognise the right of the Palestinians for the creation of
their own state," Ran Cohen, a member of the left-wing Meretz
party in the Knesset, said.
Cohen said his party also called on the Palestinians to
stop the violence and abandon the call for the right of return
to the state of Israel.
"Jews will return to Israel, Palestinians will return to
the Palestinian state," he said.
At least 890 Palestinians and 274 Israelis have been
killed since a Palestinian uprising against occupation began
after peace talks broke down in 2000.
