- Story Text: The Japanese designer who created Lady Gaga's costume at the MTV Aid Japan Award 2011 introduced a green theme inspired by nuclear disaster and environmental concerns for the 2012/13 Autumn-Winter collection at the Mercedes-Benz Japan Fashion Week on Wednesday (March 21).
Masanori Morikawa, the world-renowned designer behind self-directed label "Christian Dada" has become an icon/leader for Tokyo's edgy fashion scene after designing dresses for Lady Gaga and other celebrities.
For his autumn/winter collection entitled "Lost" he engaged with the threat to nature caused by nuclear disasters such as Chernobyl and the ongoing nuclear crisis at Fukushima.
"I was moved by news such as Chernobyl and those similar events, and I wanted to express through this collection the question of whether or not we have a place to return to," the young designer said.
Models clad mainly in black walked under green lighting as if under a forest canopy. Featured on the runway was his trademark punk-inspired metal studs that adorned entire vests with the new additions of body-hugging green mini dresses.
In keeping with the nature theme, the special highlight was a flower creation, made out of several black cushions.
Along with the dramatic soundtrack for the show, the designer also included a visual installation at the end, featuring a bird cage that lights on fire and transforms into a disappearing angel. According to the designer, the visuals hint at rebirth.
"I didn't want the angel wings to be in a specific direction but to show that there is a possibility to go in any direction," Morikawa said.
Morikawa worked as a personal assistant with "Charles Anastase" and after returning to Japan did a joint-venture with the launch of fashion label "Livraison", from there he sought to see independence and began "Christian Dad" from the 2010/11 Autumn-Winter runway season. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
