- Story Text: A new French Formula One racing car was unveiled in Paris on Wednesday (29 October) but critics said they could see little that was "revolutionary" in the design.
The car is the end result of two years of planning between sports car de signer, Guy Ligier and the government cigarette brand "Gitanes".
The project began when the French National Tobacco company, SEITA, set out to produce an entirely new French designed and built racing car.
The French engine manufacturers, Matra, are supplying the engines for the new car.
The chief of the Matra Engine Division, George Martin, said the design of the new car, code named, The Ligier F1, is far above that of other existing Formula One cars.
Motor racing critics said the car showed no new startling ideas like the four front wheels of the 1976 British Tyrrell Ford, but Matra engines took almost all the top places in last year's 24 hours Le Mans race.
The new car looks very much like all other Formula Ones which were racing this season. But the real test will come when it's raced for the first time in the Agentia Grand Prix early next year.
The driver of the new car is top French racing driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise.
