- Story Text: Menswear designer Paul Smith on Tuesday (February 24) spoke of the difficulties he experienced when creating a womenswear collection. Both Smith and top Spanish designer Amaya Arzuaga were showing their collections for Autumn/Winter 1998.
Paul Smith has been designing menswear for more than 20 years and moved into creating clothes for women five years ago.His show on Tuesday was the first he has held during London Fashion Week; in the past he has always shown in Paris.
Speaking backstage before the show Smith said when he decided to create a womenswear collection he had presumed it would simply be a matter of "making boy's clothes fit girls" but in fact it had been far more difficult.
Smith's menswear background was apparent throughout his Women collection for Autumn/Winter 1998.Traditional male outfits were transposed into shapes which flattered the female form.
The show began with Smith's trademark tailored wool suits in regular greys and browns but with bright colours checked through them.Boy's shirts were cut so long they were dresses. And for the evening, long smoking-jacket style coats were made of sumptuous velvet and shot silk.
Smith is chairman of an international design company with an annual worldwide turnover of more than 200 million U.S.dollars.This makes him Britain's most successful designer by far; the label sells internationally but particularly well in Japan.Smith was also chosen by British Prime Minister Tony Blair to be one of eight advisors to the cabinet on design and education.
The collection on offer on Tuesday from twenty-seven year-old Amaya Arzuaga was her eighth since she graduated from Madrid University of Fashion. She stuck to her trademark style comprising a mixture of knitwear and quirky evening dresses.
Arzuaga's father runs an exclusive Spanish vineyard producing some of the finest wine in Spain under the "Arzuaga" label. When his daughter launched her fashion under the same name it was therefore guaranteed to be instantly recognisable.Amaya's mother is also a knitwear designer and manufacturer.
The Amaya Arzuaga label is available in 300 stockists around the world and the company has a turnover of 15 million U.S.dollars.
