- Story Text: Designer Nino Cerruti displayed a restrained range of classic styles on Wednesday (July 5) in his spring-summer menswear show in Paris.
The style was relaxed although formal with loose, long jackets worn over tubular line trousers and as sportswear more closely fitting forms in blends of wool and cotton or silk.
A broad palette of metallic greys gave way to blues from navy to indigo with optical patterns for suits with rapier cuffs.
Knitwear was inspired by cricket stripes and this season's ubiquitous safari jackets were shown in pale hues and sometimes in terry cloth.
Among the models on the catwalk were footballer Ginola, who plays for Paris Saint Germain but has signed for English team Newcastle next season, and French rugby team members Emile N'Tamack and Laurent Cabannes.
Later, fashion moved into the realm of spectacle on Wednesday when German designer Walter Van Beirendonck of Wild and Lethal Trash staged a wacky show at the Paris Lido to present his view of the future.
The show was divided into three parts. In the first part the models wore sculptural wigs like coloured brillo pads and the theme was "dressed to kill" with bodysculpting tight T- shirts and plastic bomber jackets over loose military style trousers.
Sponge nylon was used to give a three-D effect, with deep contrasting colours, set off by motocross biking boots.
After an acrobatic dance routine by girls in jewelled costumes the second section took its theme as "kiss the future".
The models represented intergalactic tourists seeing our world with astonished eyes. The clothes had built up shoulders to give a square cut and were figure hugging, with velcro strips that allowed the colours to be changed around at will.
Some T-shirts featured photo-images, others were decorated with sequins or battery powered lights.
After a staged fight between a dragon and intergalactic warriors the final part was staged. Masked models representing a horror film version of Heidi of the Alps sported stickers or baby doll sequinned dresses.
Fake leather, polyamide foam, and knitted nylon were some of the synthetics used by Van Beirendonck to create clothes that can transform into travelling bags or pockets.
Colours were deep primaries and the clothes were accessorised with exaggerated children's shoes and dog collars encrusted with stones.
After the show Van Beirendonck said he wanted to create a vision of a freaky world and a negative future. He said shops selling his products would each be equipped with CD ROM to ease the customer's access to his design vision.
