- Story Text: - INTRO: Paris once again played host to the ultra-glamorous haute couture fashion world as leading designers gathered to show their Autumn/Winter 1998 collections.
The Autumn-Winter haute couture season for 1998 opened in Paris on Sunday (July 6) with collections from French fashion houses Nina Ricci and Torrente.
The luxurious Torrente collection, like Nina Ricci's, was aimed at the mature woman unimpressed by the "less-is-more" fashion trends of recent years.
Rosette Mette-Torrente recycled the dandy look for Torrente, matching tweed riding coats with ascots and waistcoats over white poplin shirts.
Like other recent collections, political correctness was tossed to the wind as models strode the catwalk wearingwool coats trimmed in voluminous cuffs and collars of fox fur and mink and ostrich feathers.
Jacket linings matched featherweight crepe print dresses.
Satin - in splashy, shocking pink and chartreuse or icy blue, pearl and silver - was the fabric of choice for evening sheaths and dinner jackets, with sequins flashing from pockets and lapels and paired with matching trousers or long slit skirts.
Nodding to the Oriental trend that flourished on ready-to-wear catwalks in March, Mette-Torrente sent out kimono jackets and soft pyjama trousers in startling pink and yellow silks.
Comic actor, Charlie Chaplin's grandaughter Dolores modeled the bridal gown with spreading skirts under a mink-edged jacket of ivory faille silk.
