- Story Text: Iraqis react to the news of American civilian
beheading.
Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq beheaded an American
civilian and vowed more killings in revenge for the
"Satanic degradation" of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers,
an Islamist Web site said on Tuesday (May12).
One man in the street of Baghdad on Wednesday (May 12)
said Zarqawi was not applying the rules of Islam when he
engaged in the killing.
"Musab al-Zarqawi and Osama bin Laden, both of them are
manufactured by the United States. If they are Muslims, the
messenger of Allah Muhammed says "don't kill even sick
dogs," Abdel Karim said.
Another blamed foreign influences in Iraq for the
violence.
"Musab (al-Zarqawi) is a terrorist and all of the
resistence is coming from outside Iraq, like Syria and
other parts of the world" Atef Jassem said.
"I don't agree al-Zarqawi has done in Iraq," Ars
al-Hiti said.
Jordanian-born Zarqawi, 37, has raised his profile and
status as al Qaeda's most active operational leader with a
series of suicide bombs and attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq.
A body found in Baghdad over the weekend was identified
on Monday as Berg before the videotape was released.
Photographs shown around the world of naked Iraqi
prisoners stacked in a pyramid or positioned to simulate
sex acts at Abu Ghraib prison have provoked international
anger and pose a serious setback to U.S. efforts to
stabilise Iraq.
U.S. President George W. Bush and British Prime
Minister Tony Blair have both apologised and pledged to
punish those responsible but both governments have come
under pressure for senior ministers to take the blame for
the abuse.
