- Story Text: Shakira shatters record in Mexico City after more than 200,000 people gather in Zocalo Square for concert. Colombian singer Shakira broke the record for the biggest audience at a public concert in Mexico City Sunday (May 27) after more than 200,000 fans gathered in Zocalo Square.
Shakira, who is wrapping up her Oral Fixation Tour, broke the record at Zocalo Square, one of the biggest plazas in the world. The former record was held by the local rock band, Café Tacuba, who drew 170,000 fans to a concert in 2005.
Surrounded by the illuminated colonial buildings of Zocalo Square, the pop star belted out her signature hits for adoring fans who sang along. Sunday's concert was Shakira's second performance in Mexico City in the past two weeks.
"We want other big artists should play at the Zocalo so that the people who live in Mexico City have access to these types of events because a concert is very expensive and the majority of the people can't afford it," Shakira fan, Yolanda Riesgo, said.
Shakira will stay in Mexico until Wednesday (May 30), when she will perform in the northern city of Monterrey. She will then travel to Istanbul, Turkey, where she will wrap up her Oral Fixation Tour.
The tour has featured 119 concerts around the world with an estimated attendance of 2 million people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
