- Story Text: Inspired to believe in the impossible, 64 Mexicans hopefuls took to the ice Thursday (January 10) in order to compete for a place in final of Red Red Bull's Crashed Ice competition - a combination of downhill skiing, hockey and boardercross - to be held in the historic district of Old Québec, Canada next January 26.
In order to win, competitors had to skate around a temporary ice rink set-up by Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard - for the enjoyment of those intrepid enough - in Mexico City's historic Zocalo square filled with obstacles for a heated race to the finish line.
The course, featured hairpin turns, big-air jumps and man-made obstacles.
To determine a champion, consecutive heats of four skaters racing head-to head in a double elimination bracket took place to bring down the number from 64 to a final round of four competitors.
As skaters battled for first place in the final, the champion was Mexican youngster Adrian Cervantes, who said that he will face tough competition in Canada but is willing to give it his best shot.
"As I was saying, there are very good Canadian skaters; hockey is the number one sport and they have the opportunity to skate more than we do in Mexico. They will be very tough competitors but everything is possible."
Cervantes will be sponsored by Red Bull and the tourism office of Québec City, as the city prepares to kick off their 400 year anniversary, winning an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in Canada, at the end of the month where he will face the nation's most determined skaters, vying for the championship title.
