Again, this reiterates that I don't work with records. I just create shapes and forms with human bodies. It's an abstraction, it's a performance, it's an installation. So, I don't care how many people showed up. All I know is that I filled up my space that I wanted to fill up. I made my art and it was wonderful." - Story Text: A record-breaking number of Mexican men and women poured into Mexico City's main square to be photographed nude by famed photographer Spencer Tunick on Sunday (May 6).
Authorities estimated that close to twenty-thousand people gathered in the Zocalo for the photo. The number broke Tunick's previous record of seven-thousand people in Barcelona.
However, Tunick himself said the numbers didn't concern him.
"I'm not quite sure how many people are here. Again, this reiterates that I don't work with records. I just create shapes and forms with human bodies. It's an abstraction, it's a performance, it's an installation. So, I don't care how many people showed up. All I know is that I filled up my space that I wanted to fill up. I made my art and it was wonderful," he told reporters following the photo session.
The shoot occurred in three parts. Tunick first photographed the participants standing and then laying on the ground. The third stage put them in the fetal position with their heads toward the city's cathedral.
Participants seemed giddy and slightly relieved when the event was over.
"Nerves, a lot of nerves. Before going, I was very nervous. How am I going to undress in front of all these people? And when we began to undress, we all turned around to see, asking if everyone was undressing. Once we were all naked we shouted that we felt united," said Jorge Salgado.
"It was a good experience, truly incredible with so many people," added Adriana Lopez.
Tunick is an American citizen, based in Brooklyn, New York. He has spent the last several years organizing nude photographs throughout the world, including the United States, Latin America and Europe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
