- Story Text: Attackers killed two policemen and wounded two
others in a drive-by shooting south of the northern Iraqi
city of Kirkuk.
A police officer in Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north
of Baghdad on Tuesday (March 23, 2004) said two men in a car
fired on a police patrol at around 5.30 a.m. (0230 GMT),
and escaped after the attack.
"A police patrol was fired at by attackers,
unidentified at this time. Two were killed in the attack
and two others were in a critical condition. The wounded
were taken to hospital for treatment," said police officer
Mu'nis Saeed al-Hamadani.
Hospital officials said the two wounded were in a
serious condition.
Insurgents fighting the U.S.-led occupation in Iraq
have often targeted police and other security officials,
accusing them of co-operating with the occupiers. More police have
been killed in the past year than U.S. soldiers.
