- Story Text: More than 100 people, shooting guns in the air,
attended the funeral of 8 Iraqis killed in a mortar attack
on a market in Baquba on Thursday night.
The U.S. military confirmed on Friday (September 26, 2003)
that at least 8 Iraqis were killed in a mortar attack on a
market in the restive Iraqi town of Baquba the previous
night.
It is still not clear who fired the mortar round or why
but dismayed residents joined the line of mourners who
buried the dead on Friday, before the weekly prayers.
Baquba lies in the "Sunni triangle" region, a focal
point for attacks on U.S. forces and support for ousted
leader Saddam Hussein.
"At 8.30 pm there was a mortar attack on that area
killing 8 people and injuring 15. The death toll went up in
the morning, in the hospital. We don't know who was behind
this crime. Maybe people who want to destabilise the
country or maybe people who were targetting Americans.
But in the end, it was Iraqi civilians who were killed,"
said one witness, Khaled Youssef.
The U.S. spokesman said no U.S. soldiers were hurt in
the attack.
There are no official figures for how many Iraqi
civilians have been killed since the U.S.-led assault on
Iraq on March 20. A death toll between 7,346 and 9,146 is
estimated on www.iraqbodycount.net, a web site run by
academics and peace activists that bases its figures on
incidents reported by at least two media sources.
The mortar bombing was the latest in a string of deadly
attacks in Iraq this week.
On Thursday morning, a bomb at a Baghdad hotel used by
U.S. network NBC killed a Somali guard. The previous day a
roadside bomb meant for a U.S. convoy exploded beside two
civilian buses, killing an Iraqi.
On Monday, a suicide car bomber blew himself up near
the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, also killing a
security guard.
