- Story Text: Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza who are eligible to participate in the first Palestinian general election began registering to vote on Sunday (November 12).
Palestinians, including residents of east Jerusalem, will be registering at the some 1,700 polling stations in order to vote in the January 20 elections.
Palestinians over 18 years of age are eligible to vote.
The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) said a recent census conducted by their department put the population of the West Bank -- including East Jerusalem -- and the Gaza Strip at 2.5 million people. The Palestinians expected the number of eligible voters to reach 1.2 million.
Posters urging citizens to vote in the election for president and executive and legislative councils decorated walls of the PCBS building.
Under the Israel-Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) peace deal signed in September Palestinians are to hold free and general political elections for an 82-member Palestinian Council and for a president.
