- Story Text: Brazil have sent bobsledder Armando dos Santos home from the Winter Olympics after he failed a test for the banned substance nandrolone -- the first athlete to leave the Games in doping shame.
"We have zero tolerance for doping, we don't accept anybody doped in our team or delegation. We sent him immediately home and we are going to be competing with a 100 percent clean team in these Olympics," Brazilian ice sports team leader Eric Maleson said on Tuesday (February 14).
"I am very disappointed. I trust, of course, we trust athletes. He signed all the papers. We have ethical criteria in our federation, he signed that criteria, he knew. He knew there were going to be doping tests and that if he was caught with anything he would be punished," he added.
"I was counting on him. We had been training since November. It was a complete surprise for me, for our team, everything, you know," Brazilian team's pilot Ricardo Raschini told Reuters outside the Olympic village in Sestriere.
Nandrolone, an anabolic steroid, is on the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list. Steroids are used to increase muscle mass and strength.
The 24-year-old tested positive last month, the Brazilian Olympic Committee said on its website.
Dos Santos, from Sao Paulo, had been due to compete in the four-man bobsleigh starting on February 24.
Dos Santos will be replaced in the team by reserve Claudinei Quirino, who was a member of Brazil's 4x100 metres athletic relay team that won silver at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
