International Olympic Committee (IOC) representatives met the Spanish Prime Minister and other officials in Madrid on Thursday (February 3) to discuss the city's bid to host the 2012 Games.
Thursday is the first full day of the four-day visit by the 12 members of the IOC evaluation committee.
Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and the Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardon, led the Spanish side, which was presenting reports on ecology, meteorology, security, finance, accomodation and transport to the IOC group.
The Madrid team is promoting its bid as providing 'green' games in a friendly, accessible city.
After the meeting, Prime Minister Zapatero said: "I told the commission which is evaluating our candidacy that nothing unites Spain more than Madrid 2012. I confirmed that with this Olympic candidature all we Spanish feel ourselves to be Madrilenos. I said that this is a country with a deep fondness for the Olympic movement, for the values of civilisation, culture, peace and understanding between countries."
Madrid Mayor Gallardon told reporters: "Madrid is a great capital of a great country and we know our nation, Spain and we can feel the support of all the cities, all the communities in this bid for the Games."
The evaluation committee will visit a royal summer retreat and Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium. The IOC delegation will also hear from Spanish Interior Minister Jose Antonio Alonso. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
