- Story Text: If you can´t beat the heat, head to the beach. At least that´s what people in landlocked Cologne, Germany are doing. With temperatures as high as the mid 30´s, crowds flocked to the Rhine river on Tuesday (July 20) for some relief, bikinis and beach toys in tow.
But while summer holidays are usually much anticipated, some people are finding this year's just too hot to handle.
"I think its great when its warm but 34 or 36 degrees is a bit too hot. It doesn't have to be this hot," sunbather Heike Funken said.
Others are handling the heat just fine.
"Yes I am coping really well. I think that if you don't have to work then it's ok. We are making sure that we are close to the water and not moving around too much," said Daniela Schwarz.
While the heat carries on, the river will see its fair share of people looking to cool off. The hot spot has been busy and it will only get busier as the scorching temperatures continue.
Beach-goers said they were glad not to have to work.
"At the moment I'm on holiday. It's ok then if you can cool down in the Rhine. But if you have to work then it's really difficult," said Rosi Rosniok.
According to the German Meteorological Office, temperatures rose to around 30 degrees in Cologne on Tuesday, with similar temperatures recorded across the rest of the country. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
