- Story Text: The United States Air Force held an "open day" at its base at Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt, on Sunday (8 September).
About a hundred demonstrators gathered outside the base but were stopped from entering by Air Force and West German police.
The police estimated that more than 100,000 people turned out to view the display of aircraft and weapons. They were treated to flying displays by, amongst others, Belgian helicopters and fighters and U.S. paratroopers.
The day before the Air Force opened the gates of the base, the commander of the USAF 601st Tactical Control Wing issued a statement which welcome ed all people who believe in maintaining freedom through such defence groupings as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. His statement continued: "Detractors of NATO are persona non grata on this base and will be asked to leave. Those that refuse to leave peaceably and insist on flaunting other political beliefs will be removed from the base".
