- Story Text: INTRO: Thousands of protesters have massed outside Harvard University in Boston as Chinese President Jiang Zemin gave a speech there.
Former Boston Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Ray Flynn mingled with the crowd on Saturday (November 1) and said it was important that Americans send a message to China that human rights abuses will not be tolerated.
The throng also included supporters of Jiang, including a 26-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology student from China who said he supported his president.
Jiang addressed Harvard University on the seventh day of his eight-day tour.
He spoke of the contribution the Chinese have made to the building of America.
He also said that China and the United States shared huge responsibilities and broad agreements had been reached with President Clinton.
After the speech, John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co., its eye on the huge Chinese market, was to sponsor a luncheon at a downtown Boston hotel for about 250 senior executives and state politicians to meet the president.
Representatives from some of the top companies in New England, including Fidelity Investments, Digital Equipment Corp, Raytheon Co. and BankBoston, had reportedly been invited to dine with Jiang.
Jiang's visit to Washington earlier this week included the first summit with a U.S. president since Beijing's 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy students in Tiananmen Square.
